The brief was to redesign the interior of The Social Outfit, a social enterprise company in Newtown, Sydney. The Social Outfit employ and train refugee women to learn dressmaking and business skills over a fixed term in order to provide social interaction and a source of income to newly arrived immigrants from non-English speaking backgrounds. The clothes are made from fabrics either donated or end of roll contributions. With this in mind, the brief was to redesign the interior of the store that encompasses inclusivity, sustainability and clean technology.

The design concept for the project was Assimilate: textures, people, materials. Design development was based around the POS counter and the retail display selection.

Acoustic elements such as Bola Felt Light Fittings to aid in reducing noise were incorporated into the design. Recycled metal coathangers, plywood and low VOC paints were some of the materiality included within the design.

A feature of the fitout was the construction of several large wall displays. The displays were originally designed to be in 3 parts, however the design became too clunky and so the idea of a simple graphic motif in the form of a gingerbread man display evolved. Clothes can be draped/hung from the three positions on the display being the wood pegs located on the head, torso and middrif.

A neutral palette backdrop of white and grey was selected as the fashion designs are all brightly coloured with strong patterns. This allows the fashions to shine against the wall displays. Simple white hanging robes with slanted rails have been included to improve product vision and reduce damage to the retail products through overhandling by customers.
