The site is a single level cellar door with an attached restaurant which seats approximately 30 people. The client, South Australia Tourism Commission (SATC) commissioned this development to "make South Australia a destination of choice for international and domestic visitors by promoting their state and local producers". With this in mind three local producers: Little Acre Foods, Small World Bakery and Revolver Wines were selected to showcase their products from the SATC cellar door and restaurant.
As you enter the grounds from Main Road, an array of native plants lines the grounds of the cellar door/restaurant and boundary of the adjacent property. The Sturt Desert Pea, South Australia's State Flower, lines the perimeter of the grounds. Behind the Sturt Desert Pea is a taller shrub, Channel-Leaf Feather Brush, planted to provide screening of the adjacent petrol station.
A tiered landscaped grass area, perfect for enjoying a picnic of products from the cellar door, welcomes you in. A large, wide wooden path leads
you either directly to the right towards the cellar door or to the left into the restaurant. To the right of the wooden path there is a small gravel garden with Hill Wallaby Grass and River Bottlebrush growing in it. A garden bench to dwell is also provided here. The exterior of the building is covered with a mesh panelling which allows plants to grow up and over the building, acting as an environmental filter and creating an element of privacy for the patrons and intrigue for the passerby.
A custom-made display is proposed to showcase the three producers' products. The display reaches up towards the ceiling and extends into both the cellar door and restaurant spaces. The display allows light to penetrate into the private dining room which is tucked away behind the display in the restaurant space. A sliding patterned glass door, from a local glassmaker, Leanne Fleming (from the Jam Factory in Adelaide) provides privacy to the dining space, without detracting from the restaurant.
The design features local materials throughout such as South Australian slate flooring and timber furniture by South Australian designers.
